Sustainability

WE CARE DEEPLY ABOUT OUR IMPACT ON THE PLANET AND KEEPING THIS COASTAL COMMUNITY THRIVING FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.

Moore House was founded on the ideas of reducing, reusing, and recycling and we’re committed to working towards an eco conscious future. While we’ve always valued vintage materials and pieces, we’re working hard to make better choices whenever we can and being as transparent as possible about the process.

Please let us know if you have any suggestions or if there’s more you’d like to see from us. We can all make a difference when we work to enact change, both through our practices and our buying power, let’s move together towards a brighter future.

WHAT WE’RE DOING:

UTILIZING SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

Each of our renovated properties are rehabbed with up to sixty to ninety percent of recycled or sustainable materials. Repurposed items like wood flooring, doors, windows, furniture, metals, lumber, tin, glass, bamboo, cork, and reclaimed lumber find their way into our remodels.

INCREASING ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Heating and cooling accounts for fifty percent of a home’s energy consumption. We insulate with Icynene insulation which works more effectively in coastal homes. We also install radiant water heating instead of forced hot air.

LIMITING SINGLE USE MATERIALS

We’re working diligently to eliminate as much single use plastic as we can. We no longer use plastic bags, we make sure to use all natural cleaning products, we’ve switched to zero waste soap products in the bathroom—throughout our properties we’ve made small swaps that make a bigger impact.

RECYCLING & COMPOSTING

While we encourage our guests to recycle and compost, we’re here to catch anything you might miss. We make sure to sort through all the waste from our cottages as well, pulling out any missed recyclable or compostable items.

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON:

GIVING BACK

Recently we worked with the Tiverton Land Trust, donating over 150K to preserve local land from development. But we’re always on the hunt for design projects around Rhode Island that we can donate our time, unused materials, and expertise to, if you have something specific in mind, please reach out and let us know.

SOLAR POWER & MORE

We’d ultimately love for our cottages to run with the help of solar power and we’re looking to swap in more energy efficient appliances as needed. In addition, we’re always testing out new materials for efficiency and effectiveness, one of these is organic wool batting insulation, we’ll see how it holds up to the New England weather.

MICROPLASTIC TRAPPING

Roughly sixty percent of our clothing is made up of polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers—all of which are forms of plastic. When washed, plastics get released into our oceans and get consumed by fish and wildlife. We’ve switched to front loading machines and have cora ball and/or washing bags at the cottages for guests use to help trap these fibers from entering our waterways, but we’re always looking for ways to improve.
