Coasters’ Chance Great Room Reveal
If you’ve been following us for a bit you know that we’re a little obsessed with turning spaces that were previously used for something completely different (and often straight up uninhabitable) into homes. Converting them into living spaces adds so much drama! As designers, we love bringing together the balance of the original structure with its accessory structure.
What is now the great room was originally the cottage’s barn and was filled with horse stalls. If you look closely, you’ll see the wide planks on the floor and hints of hydrated lime. We wanted to highlight these hints of the structure’s history throughout the design. Once the property was no longer an active farm, the barn just started collecting junk. By tapping into this unused space, we were able to expand the living, bedroom, and kitchen spaces.
Some of the most impactful changes we’ve made to this room: a combo of plaster and exposed wood finishes creating a sort of half-dipped look we adore! We left the original woodwork, but we called in our friends at Master of Plaster. Lauren and her family travelled from Columbia, SC with their specialty mix of Slaked Lime plaster—it really took this space to the next level. We also enlarged and rebuilt the windows using traditional techniques and old ripple glass to add more light. The final product is a barn that feels modern, but still has ties to its traditional colonial heritage.
Since this space was so sizeable we knew that filling it would be a big undertaking. What makes our designs a little different is our tendency to mix custom pieces. We combine items from our Moore House Collection, antiques, and artisan-made furniture and accessories. We like quality to shine wherever it can! That way, even if your tastes change with time, you can reupholster these high-quality items but the bases and proportions will remain the same because they’re high quality to begin with.
Step one was adding a massive, cozy sofa that would almost wrap around the room. The Moore House Coasters Sectional has a super modern silhouette—almost mimicking a woman’s neckline, but with a durability that could withstand your kids jumping all over it during a pillow fight. Plus, it’s so comfortable. We also layered in some of our favorite pieces like the 1970s Hunter Easy Chair by Norwegian Designer Torbjørn Afdaland, a vintage rug from our friends over at Passerine (because no space is complete without one), and our newly designed Passerine day bed (named after our good friend Georgia of Passerine).
We found this wide-planked table with the most incredible patina and we immediately knew it needed to live in Coasters’ Chance. Obviously, we wanted an equally massive coffee table to go with the sectional, so we added two modern feeling legs with perfectly placed cut-outs so that the table actually slides into them on either end. This gave way to a sleek design without any exposed screws or weird joint plate-supports. Japanese designers are masters of this kind of table construction, and it has a very worn-in feeling, so we named this piece the Sabi Coffee Table. If you’re in love, you’re in luck because a very limited number of these (two to be exact) are available on our e-commerce shop! You can actually find many of our custom-made pieces there too, so we’ll let you know when it goes live.
The Staircase: We like to add moments of whimsy and good old-fashioned drama, and this staircase was definitely it in this space. It’s without a doubt Blair’s favorite spot in the whole place. We found these old driftwood tree limbs on the beach about a mile down a coastal trail behind the cottage and knew we had to use them somewhere. We loved the idea of wrapping the plaster right into the side of these beams.
Staircases are just one of those locations in a home that can bring the drama or the fun. We love playing with runner designs up staircases. By wrapping each of the landings in a vintage mahal, it allowed us to keep a modern silhouette but add something old and textural. It might just be our favorite set of stairs yet!
We always love hearing what you guys think of our spaces, so leave some comments below because we have to get your thoughts on this one!
xoxo
Blair
