How We Do Holidays at Moore House

Holidays around here are just what you’d expect, merry and slightly minimal, just like the rest of our aesthetic. But don’t get us wrong, just because it doesn’t look like Santa’s workshop exploded, doesn’t mean we don’t love adding seasonal decorations to all of our cottages. We focus on small, natural touches that engage all your senses. Try some of these ideas in your own home, you’ll love them, we promise. Wishing you a festive and healthy holiday season!

A Simple tree

We put Christmas trees in all of our cottages and add white lights, but we don’t typically do ornaments. If we put anything on the tree it’s usually natural elements like dried orange slices that we make ourselves. We like to let the natural beauty of the different varieties of evergreen shine.

dried orange slices

We love making homemade dried orange slices; we use them in cocktails, in garlands, and as decorations. So simple to make, place thin citrus slices on a baking sheet (with a rack) and place in a 200-degree oven for 2 1/2 or 3 hours. Keep an eye on them towards the end, you want them to be completely dried but not burned.

A festive bar set-up

Don’t forget to add some spirit to your bar too! We love creating a hot chocolate station with fun mix ins like peppermint and marshmallows. Swap in some seasonal alcohol additions too, peppermint schnapps anyone?! A cup or sprig of greenery or winter berries feel like a nice holiday addition too. We always put out hot cider and cookies or donuts for guests when they check-in too.

forage on your own

A few evergreen branches or the trimmings from a larger Christmas tree offers up extra greenery that we like to tuck into ceramic pots (it looks like a mini Christmas tree!) and boxes in other rooms of the house. It makes every room smell amazing and it’s so easy.

buck tradition

We’ve started preparing a huge feast of Indian food on Christmas instead of classics like chicken, ham, or other typical holiday foods. We’ve done it for the past few years and it’s so much fun!
