How to Make Flower Crowns
We’re so excited about spring! In honor of the new season we thought we’d share a throwback cottage event we hosted where we spent an afternoon making flower crowns. A fun activity for any spring holiday or special occasion, flower crowns are easy to make with a few helpful tips—but if you’re not looking for a total DIY book one of our cottage experiences and let us do the heavy lifting for you!
Step one: Getting started
Gathering all of your favorite spring blooms is step one of this process—nothing is off limits. As you can see here we used ranunculus, sweet peas, and daffodils. But we also added in foraged greenery and even some fresh herbs. We wish you could have experienced first hand how good these smelled.
Step two: Gather your supplies
Great news! You don’t need too many extra supplies to make these crowns. You’ll need some green stem wire, some green florist wire, and some strong floral snips. Floral tape could also come in handy, and don’t forget the ribbons! They really add a little something extra to the whole look.
Step three: Have snacks!
OK, so this technically has nothing to do with the flower crowns, but we do think the whole process is more fun with a delicious cocktail and a beautiful cheese board. Just our expert opinion, of course!
Step four: Create your crown base
Using two green floral stems, twist them together to form a circle. Test the shape on your own head to make sure it’s a good fit, everyone’s will be a little different. You want to make sure the ends are wound tightly together so your crown doesn’t come apart.
STEP FIVE: add flowers
Create small bunches of flowers, greens, and herbs and use your floral wire or floral tape to bind them together. Once you’ve created a few bunches, start wiring them to your wire crown base. From there you have the option to cover the whole crown or to do only the front or the back—it’s up to you.
STEP SIX: ADD SOME RIBBON
This step is totally optional, but feel free to wind ribbon around the flowers or tie a bow; let the ribbons dangle for a more ethereal vibe. Keep in mind that because these are live flowers, they won’t last forever, but enjoy the flower crowns during your lunch. They’re so pretty and so much fun to make!
