Explore Our New Maine Property
We bought a quaint old hotel in Maine! Yes, that’s right, our team will be unveiling all of our Maine cottages in the next few years. First up is our Steamboat Wharf Cottage, which sits right on the water, debuting this summer (we’ll have more details soon). Then in 2022, we’ll be opening our boutique hotel, Hotel Cutler. We’ll be taking you along for the whole ride from the construction to the details on doing a distance design project. Follow along with our team to see all the behind the scenes action.
While we love RI, we’re used to a more remote location…We grew up on a cattle property in Australia where the nearest town was an hour away. So in comparison, Rhode Island just isn’t off the grid enough and we were looking for something a little more remote. Maine is just the right place. The slower pace and spotty cell service forces you to relax and disconnect. You’re surrounded by nature and the properties sit in this teeny tiny lobster town. Maine also looks so different from Rhode Island, it’s wooded and wild, it almost feels like you’re in the Pacific Northwest instead of New England. The cottages feel super raw and quintessential New England, with cedar shakes, beautiful windows, and buoys hanging off the houses, plus, they’re all waterfront.
The first cottage going live this summer, is the Steamboat Wharf Cottage. It’s got 200-degrees of waterfront views and has its own private trail that goes into the reserve. The cottage sleeps eight people and will have all of the standard Moore House amenities by the time we’re through with it! We’re also completely renovating the kitchen. The house is a traditional Cape style, and is one and a half stories. There’s only about fifteen feet between you and the waterfront; it looks over the vast harbor of Cutler, Maine. The hiking in this area is exceptional and this cottage is within walking distance from some great trails. Unlike our Rhode Island properties, this cottage is only available in the summer, so from June to October.
We’re also opening a boutique hotel! We’re rehabbing the original Hotel Cutler, which is currently uninhabitable, but we’re hoping to restore it to its former glory. With eight bedrooms that overlook the water and the town, it will feel quaint while still offering guests privacy and autonomy during their stay. It will definitely be what you’ve come to expect from Moore House design-wise, but it’s going to have a more luxe feel than the average cottage. We’re working to try to preserve the heritage of the space. It’s going to have more muted color palettes, antiques like rag rugs, and dipped furniture pieces; plus you’ll see some custom pieces that you’ll be able to buy from our shop that’s opening later this year.
Cutler is one of the last remaining lobster towns in Maine, so pretty much anyone that lives here is somehow involved in lobster fishing. The town contains a small post office and a library. Cutler is the only place you can head out to see the puffin tours. At times it feels like you’re in Alaska. All of our guests get a welcome gift of fresh lobster! The hotel will start booking in 2022. Follow along on @moorehousedesign’s Instagram for the whole process.
