We’re back with our recurring blog column! If you’re new here, at the end of each month(ish) we round up all of the articles, designs, reveals, and more that have inspired us in the past thirty days. Needless to say, it was a very busy summer so it’s crazy to think we’re nearly into October. We’re always exploring the depths of pinterest, instagram and the various publications we’re subscribed to, but in addition to sharing what caught our attention this month we’ve got quite a few internal updates for you all. Oh, and happy first weekend of Fall! May the farm stands, apple picking and pumpkin everything commence.

A Moore House Fall Recipe Round-Up

Though the first day of Fall isn’t technically until September 22nd, we’re all for getting into the Fall swing of things... Besides, faux Pumpkins have been in Michaels since like July 20th, so we know we can’t be the only ones ready to embrace the change of seasons. Cringe? Sorry not sorry, we’re spooky gals around here! As we mentioned the other day, for many of us here in New England the Fall season's arrival means pumpkin picking and hay-bale rides… However, what we really love about Fall is all the yummy food that can be made from local farm-fresh ingredients! We’ve pulled together a healthy handful of cozy recipes to give you all a push into the autumnal spirit.

A Bit Moore… About Our E-Comm Launch

It’s been a minute since we updated you on everything our all-star design team has been up to around here! For this week’s dose of design goodness, we’re treating you all to an update that feels… a bit overdue. We’re quickly rolling into the fall season and feel it’s time we more than hint at the development and launch of our e-commerce shop. It’s happening, people!! We’ve been talking about it for a while now, but it’s not a simple process so bear with us and get ready for another wild ride. We hope you enjoy these updates, and are getting as excited about this next chapter as we are.

The Delia — A Coastal Grandmother-Inspired Cocktail

Though we may be a little extra and are in the truest meaning behind the name of this blog “a bit Moore”, we love crafting all sorts of beautifully creative cocktails. We first made this cocktail on a picturesque summer afternoon at our Coaster’s Chance Cottage in Maine and have been ruminating about the creation ever since. It’s a relatively simple “mixy” as far as craft libations go, but it’s sure to satisfy all those sultry end-of-summer cravings. We named her after the woman who is pretty much as close to the spirit of the village of Cutler as you can get in a worldly form. She’s the Coastal Grandmother, a wealth of maritime knowledge, and one of the sweetest “Mainers” we’ve come to know yet — she is, none other than our lovely neighbor Delia. We created this drink in Maine, so it’s only fitting that it’s named after her. She’s sweet, tart, and can definitely come on a bit strong — if we can be so bold, it’s basically a Coastal Grandmother in a cocktail.

We’re back with our recurring blog column! If you’re new here, at the end of each month(ish) we round up all of the articles, designs, reveals, and more that have inspired us in the past thirty days. It’s been one of our busiest months yet — though we feel like we say that every month — so it’s hard to believe we’re already turning the corner into August next week. We’re always exploring the depths of Pinterest, Instagram, and the various publications we’re subscribed to and since there is so much goodness out there, we like to share our own findings with you. Here’s what caught our attention in the midst of the summer heat — Happy reading :)

Maine Kitchen Reveal

The strokes of the subtly undulating lime-wash plaster dance across the angled walls. An original wood beam powdered by historic touches of dehydrated lime stands reminiscent of the old sea captain who built this place. Sanded back wide-planked floors strengthen the home’s rustic nature. And the plethora of windows, custom cabinetry details, massive center island, and vintage wood stove, this kitchen is a broody bold coast dream come true. We brought this kitchen back to the 21st century without losing one bit of its historic charm.

Before & After: Colonial Modernist

If you know us, then you know how much we love a good before and after — We get to explain why design is imperative in a well-thought-out home as well as give you all a bit of behind-the-scenes insight into our design process. We revealed our Colonial Modernist Project — a multi-floor, full-gut “floverhaul” back in April, but in case you missed it allow us to introduce you to this charmingly updated historic beauty!

Our Favorite Bold Coast Activities

Since we were up in Maine this week photographing the swoon-worthy kitchen at our Coaster's Chance Cottage, we've compiled a list of summer activities for those of you heading north for the season, and for those of you who maybe need a push to make the trek up. The Lupines are going crazy right now and hiking along the bold coast trails makes us feel like we're in another world — this place feels like a cross between the Pacific Northwest and a Scandinavian fairytale. Now that we've hyped it up, here's our list of recommendations as far as what to do while you're in Maine other than kicking your feet up and watching the Lobster boats troll by. We hope you enjoy!

It’s (basically) the end of the month, you know the drill. It’s time for our recurring blog column in which we compile all of the articles, designs, reveals, and more that inspired us in the past thirty days. We love to share the love, so here’s a round-up of what we saw and saved this month as well as a few updates of our own!!

The Colonial Modernist Reveal

Brimming with charming details like smoky black cabinetry, textural brick walls, and modernized colonial details, we completely transformed this space for our clients. Here on the east coast, our interiors are usually not the largest in square footage so it’s imperative that we meticulously consider the flow, and functionality of each space within a complete design. After reading that, it won’t come as a surprise that many of our clients find themselves needing more space!! With their growing family, our young clients came to us in search of a harder working, more open-concept floor plan filled with smart storage and charm-filled, modern accents. Our signature style here at Moore House Design is what we like to call “broody'“ which if you’re unfamiliar is the yummy combination of moodiness and brightness in a space. The perfect balance of these elements creates a space that feels relaxed, modern, and rich in character.

Round Top Round Up: Spring 2022

As you’ve probably noticed by now, we do things a little differently around here! Antiques and designer pieces are the love language of our interiors. Antiques are the backbone of our practice here at Moore House Design. Naturally, we focus on sourcing only the best of the best which is a painstaking process. Roundtop is our first stop other than sourcing directly from the European market. We've rounded up some tricks of the trade as well as some of our favorite spots and finds from our time in Texas.

Before & After: Vintage Brutalist

We revealed our Vintage Brutalist Project in October, but we never really showed you how we got from point A to B. Before and afters are one of our favorite things because they allow us to remove some of the mystery behind our magic. Our wonderful clients came to us in search of a more cohesive interior brimming with super cozy, extra functional elements. This space had unusually great bones, so other than an epic built-in feature which we’ll get to in a second, the project scope was heavier on the furnishing and painting side of things.

The Lowdown on Reupholstery and Upcycling

You’ve probably heard us on Instagram tout reupholstering pieces as more sustainable than shopping new. Sustainability is at the core of what we do here at Moore House Design so with each project we take on, we make an effort to incorporate environmentally friendly and sustainably sourced pieces — often coming in the form of refurbished antiques. If the opportunity to restore a piece by reupholstering it presents itself, nine times out of ten we’ll do it… and here’s the lowdown on the practice.

Moore House Approved Material Breakdown

Materials completely make or break a space so naturally they’re hardwired into what we do as interior designers. There is such a thing as a well designed space with harsh material selections, and a poorly designed design with nice material selections. Obviously the goal is to create a great design with great material selections. Everything in design is all about balance…and knowing when to break that balance to create something beautiful and meaningful. We’re giving you the low-down some of our favorite materials to give you a little insight to how we create our layered, broody interiors. So here’s the breakdown of our favorites…

The Afternoon and Dining Room Reveal

We’ve shown you a few spaces original to the cottage in our Captain’s Suite and Wheelhouse Loft Reveal, but there’s more! Brimming with New England charm, these spaces feature 200-year-old horsehair and plaster walls, warm wood tones, and wide-planked floors — quite the setting for some of our favorite custom-designed pieces. We don’t like holding these kind of secrets, so it’s a relief to finally be revealing the last spaces in our Coaster’s Chance cottage — the Morning Room and Dining Room!*
